New Hair

I have been a brunette my entire life.  Except for that Sun-In phase... then my hair was orange.  Fortunately, there is little photographic evidence of that period in my life.  Only my 7th grade school picture hidden away in my parents' house showcases that fantastic style choice.  That and my lip bumper.  Because that shit was cool, didn't you know?  (WHYYYY did my parents let me out of the house??)

But now that I'm an adult, I can make all the silly decisions that I want.  Because that is what being a grown up is all about.  And since I currently don't work in an office, I figured what better time to experiment?  I saw this photo last week, showed it to my boyfriend and told him how awesome I thought it was.

Right??
So, knowing that I have dark brown hair, I knew this would take some serious work.  I decided to go with an overall ombre look (ombre means gradation in french), which has the hair fading from dark to light.  Which basically means that it is now socially acceptable to have visible roots.  Perfect.  I'm on board already.  Then I just needed some colors slapped on the ends.

By a recommendation from Brendan, I decided to go to Floyd's Barbershop on Melrose.  Apparently he used to get his haircut there all the time and it's a funky little place that he thought would know how to color (every stylist had some dye in their hair).

Floyd's
After almost four hours with my barber named Spindle, three washes, a protein treatment, toning, lifting, bleaching, coloring, three gossip mags, and miraculously no ticket on my car in a 1-hour parking zone, I walked out with this:

It is not as blond as I thought it would be (and as my inspiration picture above), but that's probably for the best.  I should ease into a full-blond look.  But he put four colors in - pink, green, purple, and blue - and I love them!  I think it's fun and funky and good for a change.

The colors are only supposed to last for 7-10 washes, so I won't be shampooing my hair as much, which apparently you aren't supposed to do every day anyway.  But I did pick up some sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner last night, which should help keep the colors in a little longer.  I also figure if the colors fade and I want more of them, I'll try the ol' kool-aid hair dye trick (reverting back to 7th grade again).

Would you try a funky hair style just for fun?  I find that coloring my hair is much less permanent and easy to change back.  A cut on the otherhand... I hacked off all my hair about 3 years ago and it is FINALLY back to the length I want it.  Never. Again.

  1. I saw that picture on the internet before, and I LOVED it. But now that I work in an office I can't do it. But I'm glad you did! It looks SO awesome!
